Körner’s Folly offers a variety of educational programming and resources for all ages. Educational programs highlight history, architecture, performing arts, and art history through curriculum-based tours and activities.
For educators, Körner’s Folly offers programs structured to provide students with meaningful experiences in local history that are aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
Bob’s Big Adventure Tour
This program serves pre-K, kindergarten and first grade students with the goal of making local history approachable. Beginning with an age-appropriate story of a special pet who lived at Körner’s Folly to be read in the classroom, students will explore this amazing house and learn about the family who made it a home through a guided tour and post-tour activities.
This program serves students in 1st – 3rd grades providing an opportunity to travel back in time to the Victorian era. Students will make historical comparisons to present day, and recognize change over time with a guided tour, an integrated photo scavenger hunt, and post-tour activities. Can be booked with a Puppet Show to precede tour.
Recommended for grades K – 5, the Körner’s Folly Family Revue is a live puppet show introducing young visitors to the Körner family and the history of Körner’s Folly. The puppet show takes place in Cupid’s Park Theatre located on the 3rd floor of Körner’s Folly, and lasts approximately 20 minutes. Can be booked with the Exploring History Program for students in 1st – 3rd grade.
Recommended for grades 3 – 5, Reader’s Theater offers a unique way to learn about Körner’s Folly and the Körner family. Students take on the roles of members of the Körner family, reading from a provided script and sharing information about the house and family with their classmates. Reader’s Theater is intended to give students a chance to teach each other about the Kernersville history and what life was like during the Victorian era, while also exercising their reading comprehension and public speaking skills.
This tour experience explores the economic, cultural, and social history of North Carolina during the Victorian era, ca. 1870 – 1900. Themes include the impact of the Industrial Revolution on the Piedmont, the culture of the Gilded Age, and how the town of Kernersville grew, viewed through the lens of the Körner family and Körner’s Folly.
Focusing on either a fine arts or decorative arts track, high school students will zoom in on the incredible details that make Körner’s Folly unique during the guided tour portion of the program. After touring the house, students will have time for self-guided exploration, photography, and sketching.
