Körner’s Folly welcomes undergraduate and graduate students to gain professional and practical experience in the museum field, specifically in Education & Public Programming, Historical Research, and Collections & Exhibitions through the opportunities listed below.

Internships with Körner’s Folly typically last one semester (3 months, approximately 120 hours) and do not include housing or transportation. At the conclusion of an internship, Körner’s Folly may provide a letter of reference.

Don & Jan Hawkins Scholarship

Thanks to the generosity of Don and Jan Hawkins, one scholarship is awarded to an accepted student each summer at the discretion of the Körner’s Folly Foundation. In recognition of the intern’s work in Education & Public Programming, Historical Research, or Collections & Exhibitions, the intern will be awarded a $1,000 stipend at the mid-point and conclusion of the internship.

Academic Credit

Students may be eligible to receive academic credit for internships, subject to college/university approval. Accepted students are responsible for making arrangements, providing necessary forms and materials to the internship supervisor, and communicating all requirements of their schools to ensure that the internship structure fulfills these academic requirements. If applying and seeking credit, be sure to ask your advisor or Registrar’s office how many total contact hours you will need over the semester.

Education & Public Programming Internship

Working closely with the Operations & Programs Manager, the Education/Public Programming Intern will:

  • Read required texts about Körner’s Folly and the history of Kernersville
  • Shadow and prepare to lead tours of Körner’s Folly and grounds
  • Attend and assist with public programs at Körner’s Folly during course of internship
  • Create a final product of curriculum/hands-on activities aligned with the intern’s professional goals, interests, and research, with measurable objectives

Historical Research Internship

Working closely with the Executive Director and/or Operations & Programs Manager, the Historical Research Intern will:

  • Read required texts about Körner’s Folly and the history of Kernersville
  • Conduct primary source research, including transcription of diaries, letters, and other documents in collection
  • Research and explore one of the following themes: Jule’s work as an artist/sign painter/interior designer, the Victorian Era in the Piedmont Triad, the lives of formerly-enslaved people in the Piedmont Triad, Victorian Fashion, etc.
  • Create a final product based on selected topic, such as a digital exhibition, interpretive guide, audio or visual guide, research presentation, or other project that aligns with the student’s professional goals and interests

Collections & Exhibitions Internship

Working closely with the Operations & Programs Manager, the Collections & Exhibitions Intern will:

  • Read and understand the Körner’s Folly collections management policy, best practices for collections care and handling, and housekeeping policies
  • Assist with cataloguing, conservation, record-keeping, inventory, research and identification, storage, and other concerns involved with the care and management of the Körner’s Folly collections
  • Assist with research, interpretation, signage, and exhibition development
  • Create a final product aligned with the intern’s professional goals, interests, and research and/or the history and culture of Körner’s Folly ‘s properties or the Piedmont Triad, such as a digital, case, or small gallery exhibition
